Makarapa City

Welcome to Makarapa City

The challenge

For over a century, mining and South Africa have been intertwined. As one of the largest mining companies in the country, we actively seek to be a partner in the future and to create sustainable value that makes a real difference to all our stakeholders. And we know that our communities lie at the heart of this commitment.

The conversations in mining are changing in a big way and we want to engage in authentic dialogue that brings about progress, especially where our people work and live.

There are many stories that play out in our communities and at times we’re one of the main characters. These stories often include the various social and economic issues that our communities face on a daily basis, and as an employer and partner, it’s important that we talk about their issues and find solutions together.

The idea

This led to a new chapter in an ongoing journey where these authentic and relevant conversations can be ignited. Where solutions can be found and better futures forged. This is ‘Makarapa City’, a nine-part radio drama set against the backdrop of a fictional mining community.

Now in its second season, it’s recorded in the six official languages of our mine communities, and aired on local language radio stations, Makarapa City is a true microcosm of what’s playing out in our communities, digging deeper into everyday issues like debt, health, love and ambition.

Through Makarapa City, we entertain our communities with the trials and tribulations of nine vibrant and diverse characters, and open up conversations around real issues that real people face. The series explores how Anglo American, as an active citizen, has contributed to helping communities find solutions in addressing issues of health, enterprise development and education.

Listen to the English recordings of each episode and don't forget to tune into Makarapa City to find out how to enter our weekly competitions. Find out more by reading the terms and conditions.
