In the results of the JSE’s annual review of the Socially Responsible Investment (“SRI”) Index, announced today, Anglo American Platinum Limited (“Anglo American Platinum” or “the Company”) qualified to be included in the 2014 SRI index. The Company was also awarded best performer in the high impact category.
Launched a decade ago, the JSE SRI Index, a first of its kind in an emerging market, reviews listed companies in the FTSE/JSE All Share Index annually. The Index which aims to promote sustainable and transparent business practices, encourages integrated risk management and facilitates responsible investment strategies, as well as promotes engagement.
The sustainability development challenges Anglo American Platinum encounters are as significant as they are varied, and require considerable effort to overcome. The key objectives of Anglo American Platinum’s strategy are the wellness and safety of its employees; the security of the resources it depends on, such as water and electricity; and community and stakeholder engagement. In 2010, the Company incorporated these priority areas into the overall Company strategy, and began to address issues of sustainability at a strategic level. It has continued to entrench sustainability in the business.
Chris Griffith, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, said: “We are honoured to have again been included in the JSE SRI index. Our fundamental restructuring in 2013, in the face of challenging and changing external and internal dynamics, is helping us build a more resilient organisation, capable of sustaining value for the long term, for all stakeholders. Similarly, we recognise that we are custodians of our natural resources, and that our aim is to ensure that we leave a post-mining environment that is both sustainable and beneficial. By remaining true to our values and staying focused on our sustainability goals, we are able to deliver our ultimate goal to deliver the full potential from our operations through our people, in a values driven and socially acceptable way”.
