Over R390 000 funding from Anglo American’s dedicated Corporate Social Investment arm, the Chairman’s Fund towards the Neighbourhood Old Age Homes’ (NOAH) Assisted Living Facilities Programme, has considerably aided the lives of elderly people in Khayelitsha and Woodstock, Cape Town.
These grants, which the Chairman’s Fund has provided since 2007, have equipped NOAH to provide better care, support, comfort, and opportunity to disadvantaged pensioners in the region. NOAH has used the grant this year for two of its assisted living facilities, which are Nonkululeko (in Khayelitsha) and McNulty House (in Woodstock).
Mbuzeli Mrwetyana, NOAH Fundraising Manager, notes that the Chairman’s Fund support will prove crucial to improving the lives of individuals in need.
"Thanks to the consistent support that the Chairman’s Fund has provided to NOAH, we have been able to adequately accommodate 47 elderly men and women in a safe and healthy environment.
These grants have made an enormous difference to these elderly people’s lives, as they are able to stay connected to their communities, retain their dignity and independence, and remain healthy, active and in control of their lives for as long as possible."
NOAH provides an integrated package of care for disadvantaged older persons in the Western Cape, including safe and affordable accommodation in the community, primary healthcare, health monitoring and advice, wellness support, and service centres offering activities and support.
These elderly men and women are further empowered and trained to run the houses as autonomous, cost effective units, facilitating social interaction, emotional, and psychosocial support, as well as the development of a caring community, and the maintenance of a primary health care service.
Norman Mbazima, Chairman’s Fund Chairperson concludes that the Fund’s continued support of NOAH is aligned to its overall commitment to making a real and lasting difference in underprivileged communities.
"One of the core objectives of the Chairman’s Fund is to support development initiatives aimed at bringing hope and opportunity to South Africa’s disadvantaged. NOAH undoubtedly fulfils this criterion through the sterling work it carries out in ensuring elderly people can live out their lives in comfort, safety and dignity.
