Where we mine

Platinum has a total of three mining operations in the Bushveld Complex, namely Mogalakwena mine, Amandelbult complex which is made up of Dishaba and Tumela mines, and Mototolo mine. We also have mining rights over the Twickenham Project area, which is on care and maintenance, and Der Brochen, adjacent to Mototolo. Elsewhere, Platinum owns Unki Platinum Mine in Zimbabwe. Platinum has several strategic joint ventures (JVs) in which it holds significant interests, namely, Modikwa Platinum Mine (50%), a JV with African Rainbow Minerals Mining Consortium Limited and Kroondal (50%), a JV with Sibanye-Stillwater. The Bokoni Platinum Mine (49%), which is on care and maintenance is a JV with Atlatsa Resources Corporation.

Our difference

Our value-driven strategy will deliver a stable, competitive and profitable business that will be sustainable in the long-term and will deliver value to all stakeholders.

We explore, we mine, we concentrate, we smelt, we refine and we market. As a result, we have an in-depth knowledge of PGM production and markets. Using this knowledge, we invest in developing sustainable markets for PGMs, partnering directly with research institutions as well as customers in the industrial, jewellery and investment sectors.

Uses of platinum

Platinum’s diverse range of applications make it one of the most valued materials in the world today.

It is widely used in jewellery, due to its purity, resistance to fading and ability to hold jewels securely.

Platinum and other platinum group metals (PGMs) enable catalytic converters to strip pollutants from car exhaust gases, and demand for PGMs from the car industry continues to grow as emissions regulators become ever more stringent.

Platinum has a great range of other uses in the chemical, electrical, medical, glass and petroleum industries. And with rising concern about environment and energy costs, there’s growing interest in platinum fuel cells as an alternative energy source.
