Charm and allure... that’s platinum!
It comes as no surprise why this resilient and rare white metal has earned its place as one of the most sought-after properties in jewellery design.
Since its discovery, platinum has gained a reputation among jewellers as a difficult metal to work with. This tainted reputation is the very inspiration that led Anglo American to launch the first PLATAFRICA Jewellery Design competition in 1998.
2017 marks PLATAFRICA’s 18th Awards Showcase
South Africa has more than 80% of the world's platinum reserves while China accounts for 50% of the world's platinum jewellery offtake. In light of this, the theme for the 2017 awards is “Bold Minimalism”. It serves as a challenge to our local designers to sketch, sculpt and mould work that celebrates both the source and the target market of this precious metal.
This premium showcase of the country’s most impressive platinum jewellery designers calls for both professional and student entrants, with only ten finalists shortlisted from each stream respectively.
As a forum for current professionals and hopeful student jewellery designers alike, PLATAFRICA underpins Anglo American’s commitment to being the benchmark for championing future talent.
Imagine turning a piece of metal into something desired. It was a difficult task for even our most experienced judging panel members to shortlist the entries. We are privileged to count Kirtikumar Devjee of Kirti Jewellers, Pallavi Sharma from Platinum Guild International (India), Charlotte Crosse from Metal Concentrators and Labi Kapo of Akapo Jewellers as part of the judging panel.
