Corporate Social Investment or CSI is a popular term in modern day best practice to ensure every organisation puts social investment on their priority list. While 1994 sparked a new wave of corporate social responsibility, Anglo American’s Chairman’s Fund has actually been in existence since the 50s – making it one of the oldest examples of corporate philanthropy in the country.
The Chairman’s Fund is the leading corporate donor in South Africa – a title it has held for eight consecutive years. The Fund is the dedicated instrument through which Anglo American channels its CSI spend, of which Anglo American spent R777 million in 2012.
The Fund’s investments range from small grassroots initiatives to major capital-building projects and large-scale service delivery programmes in partnership with local government and communities. The Fund focuses on HIV/AIDS, healthcare, welfare, education, and entrepreneurial development, with a particular focus on the alleviation of poverty and the development of communities in South Africa.
