Anglo American appoints Themba Mkhwanazi as CEO of coal business in South Africa

Anglo American plc (“Anglo American”) announces the appointment of Themba Mkhwanazi as the CEO of its coal business in South Africa, effective during the second quarter of 2014, following Godfrey Gomwe’s decision to retire from Anglo American.

Themba Mkhwanazi is currently Rio Tinto's Regional General Manager for the Americas, responsible for delivering technical and operational improvements across Rio Tinto's businesses in the region. Themba has held a number of senior roles within the resources industry, including as COO of Richards Bay Minerals, during which he was responsible for mining, smelting and processing operations. Prior to that, he was a Managing Director with the Huntsman Corporation in South Africa.

Seamus French, CEO of Anglo American's Coal business, said: "I am delighted to appoint Themba Mkhwanazi to lead our coal business in South Africa. Themba brings extensive international operating experience gained across his two decades in the resources industry, including 16 years in South Africa and more recently in the USA. Themba's leadership and technical expertise will be instrumental in helping us deliver the full potential from our consolidated global coal business."

Mark Cutifani, CEO of Anglo American, said: "Godfrey Gomwe has made an invaluable contribution to Anglo American throughout his 15 years with the Group in a number of senior executive positions. Godfrey's commercial experience and collaborative approach to engagement has strengthened our business in South Africa and we thank him for his support in integrating our global coal interests in recent months. Themba Mkhwanazi, age 44, has extensive experience in the resources industry, including 16 years in his native South Africa and more recently in the USA. Themba was a Managing Director for the Huntsman Corporation in South Africa until 2007 when he was appointed COO of Richards Bay Minerals, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. In 2011, Themba was seconded to Rio Tinto’s coal business, before taking up the role of Regional General Manager for the Americas in 2012. Themba holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering and is married with two teenage boys.
