Anglo American Platinum Limited (“Anglo American Platinum or the “Company”) has finalised various Memoranda of Agreements with the Department of Health, Limpopo Provincial Government whereby the Company will build three new clinics in the Province and provide equipment to a fourth clinic.
The initiatives are part of the company’s commitment to sustainable community development and improving the standard of living of the members of the communities neighbouring its mining operations through its Social Labour Plans.
At a signing ceremony hosted by the MEC of Health Honourable Dr Phophi Ramathuba in Limpopo, the Company made an undertaking to construct clinics at the , Sekuruwe Village in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality, at Der Brochen at Maseven Village in Greater Tubatse Local Municipality and at Naledi Village based at Aganang Local Municipality. In addition, the Smash Block community in the Thabazimbi Local Municipality clinic will receive equipment, technology infrastructure, furniture and fittings. The completed initiatives will cost approximately R46million and construction will commence in the first quarter of 2016.
The Department of Health, Limpopo Provincial Government will assume responsibility for the management, maintenance and operation of the clinics and will upon completion be handed over by Anglo American Platinum to the Department. The Department will also ensure that health services are provided to community members.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Executive Head of SHE & Mining Dean Pelser, said: “As Anglo American Platinum, we are encouraged by the partnership and leadership demonstrated by the Limpopo Provincial Government in reaching an agreement milestone which will see primary health care services brought closer to communities.”
Dr Phophi Ramathuba MEC of Health in Limpopo said “I am delighted to partner with Anglo American Platinum as I have been looking for this type of support from the private sector. These MOUs are a step in the right direction, demonstrating commitment from the Company supporting the objectives of the Department of Health in providing healthcare. This occasion is taking place at an opportune time where the world is commemorating the life of an icon. Madiba approached captains of industries to build schools and clinics for the benefit of all South Africans. We are pleased today that Anglo American Platinum headed the call and together with them we will honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela on healthcare provision for all.”
