Anglo American's Thermal Coal business halts operations for safety

25 January, 2012

Anglo American’s thermal coal business will stop production at all of its operations today in remembrance of two colleagues who regrettably lost their lives earlier this month.

While the Company has made significant improvements in its overall safety performance, these fatalities underpin the need to ensure that every employee understands the importance of maintaining a personal focus on working safely at all times.

Today, Norman Mbazima, Thermal Coal’s CEO and senior representatives of the Department of Mineral Resources, National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity, UASA and the Chamber of Mines will address more than 15,000 employees and contractors at operations in the Mpumalanga and Free State provinces, on the need to redouble the collective safety effort.

In addition, managers and employees from all 10 operations and service departments will participate in focus groups that will help guide the way forward in achieving the goal of zero harm.

“Safety is our number one priority and we are deeply saddened by the recent tragic loss of life at two of our mines. It is unacceptable that a colleague should lose his or her life at the workplace. Our main objective is to ensure that our employees return home safely and we continue to relentlessly pursue the goal of reaching zero harm at all our operations.”

“Today is dedicated to collectively identifying the obstacles that inhibit our achievement of this goal. This will help us to pave the way forward to an accident free workplace,” Mbazimba said.
