For over a century, mining and South Africa have been intertwined. As one of the largest mining companies in the country, we actively seek to be a partner in the future and to create sustainable value that makes a real difference to all our stakeholders.
And we know that our communities lie at the heart of this commitment.
The conversations in mining are changing in a big way and we want to engage in authentic dialogue that brings about progress, especially where our people work and live.
There are many stories that play out in our communities and at times we’re one of the main characters.
Our mines and host communities, which are also often home to much of our workforce, operate as an ecosystem and both must be healthy to prosper.
Aligned with our Purpose ‘To re-imagine mining to improve people’s lives’, we must define our role in preventing, responding to, and recovering from the effects of the pandemic, whilst protecting the integrity of our business.
This led to a new chapter in an ongoing journey where these authentic and relevant conversations can be ignited.
Where solutions can be found, and better futures forged. This is ‘Makarapa City’, a nine-part radio drama set against the backdrop of a fictional mining community.
Now in its seventh season, it’s recorded in the seven official languages of our mine communities and aired on local language radio stations.
Makarapa City is a true microcosm of what is playing out in our communities, digging deeper into everyday issues like Gender-bases violence, safety, fraud, health, love and ambition.
Through Makarapa City, we entertain our communities with the trials and tribulations of nine vibrant and diverse characters while opening conversations around real issues that real people face.
The series also explores how Anglo American, as an active citizen, has contributed to helping communities find solutions in addressing issues of health, enterprise and youth development, responsible mining, technology and partnerships.
This year, Makarapa City Season 7 aims to showcase through storytelling, the opportunities that encourage a better future. A future that everyone can be a part of. A future that works for everybody. A better future.
