At Anglo American South Africa, we recognise that our identity and actions are deeply intertwined with the planet we all inhabit. Our commitment to preserving and protecting scarce resources, promoting biodiversity and minimising our environmental footprint is unwavering. We adopt a “cradle-to-cradle” approach, planning for mine closure from the discovery phase to ensure a lasting, positive impact long after operations cease.

We aspire to a future where generations can experience and cherish South Africa's rich wildlife and biodiversity. Anglo American Platinum's collaboration with SANParks, including the donation of Bat Hawk light aircraft, enhances surveillance, conservation and anti-poaching efforts in Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant National Park and Mapungubwe National Park.
Our vision is to achieve a net positive impact (NPI) across our operations through the mitigation hierarchy and investment in biodiversity stewardship. Learn more about our biomonitoring project at Kumba Iron Ore's Kolomela mine, initiated in 2010. This project aims to provide detailed environmental insights and use biodiversity data to guide decision-making, ensuring our operations support and enhance the ecosystems in which we operate.
We strive to create an agile business that is always responsive to opportunities or disruptions. This means protecting our colleagues and operating at our best, day in, day out. We aim to remain resilient, reliable, stable and capable, despite challenges and change.
In partnership with local municipalities and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), we've repaired critical pipelines, installed boreholes, and enhanced water infrastructure, ensuring a reliable water supply for areas like Postmasburg. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we established emergency water distribution systems to support vulnerable communities. To ensure the longevity of these initiatives, we’re transferring skills to local staff through the Municipal Capability and Partnership Programme (MCPP), enabling staff to maintain and manage water infrastructure long into the future.
By securing sustainable water access and empowering communities, Kolomela mine’s efforts reflect our commitment to creating lasting, positive change.
