For over a century, our people have been at the core of Anglo American's success. Guided by our Values and a strong sense of Purpose, our global workforce is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment.
Understanding and addressing the needs and perspectives of our employees is crucial. We actively engage with them through various channels, such as global surveys and our Global Workforce Advisory Panel. These platforms provide valuable insights that inform our leadership's decisions so they reflect the diverse needs of our people.
We maintain regular and constructive dialogue with labour unions to address key employee concerns like safety, job security and workforce development. This close collaboration enables a positive work environment across our operations.
Empowering our employees to thrive is central to driving innovation and high performance. This focus not only benefits our workforce but also strengthens the communities we serve, promoting sustainable growth and lasting positive impacts. By continuously investing in our people, we cultivate a culture that prioritises well-being and professional development. This commitment is integral to our Purpose of re-imagining mining to improve people's lives and serves as a cornerstone of our long-term strategy for meaningful success.
This section details our partnership with our people, which empowers them to achieve their fullest potential.
Much of our work begins with people choosing to move forward together. Each year at the Comrades Marathon, thousands of Anglo American colleagues do just that, each with their own reasons and a shared commitment to taking the next step alongside one another.
Throughout their training and on race weekend, our people are supported not only by their teammates and families, but also by members of leadership who show up in person, join warm-up runs and send messages of encouragement. We recognise the preparation, resilience and well-being it takes to pursue a goal like this, and we make space for our people to follow those ambitions.
What stands out is the way colleagues show care for one another: tracking progress, offering support along the route and celebrating every finish, whether it comes with a medal or simply the satisfaction of completing the distance. Within our organisation, the same spirit of respect, encouragement and shared energy is reflected in how teams work together every day.
The achievement belongs to the runners, and we celebrate their effort with genuine pride. Our role is to support them as colleagues and as people, to stand beside them at work and to be present in the moments that matter in their lives.
Every year, Global Safety Day gives our people time to pause, connect and focus on what matters most: keeping each other safe. Across our South African offices and operations, teams take part in practical learning, open discussions and demonstrations that highlight how safety is woven into everyday decisions.
The day includes perspectives from leaders such as Nolitha Fakude, Chair of Anglo American South Africa; Alison Atkinson, Group Director for Projects and Development; and Mpumi Zikalala, CEO of our Kumba Iron Ore business. Their messages emphasise that safety is a shared responsibility and that each of us has a role in speaking up and stepping in when something does not feel right.
Colleagues from every part of the business share experiences, raise questions and build confidence in recognising and addressing risks proactively. Safety is seen not as the responsibility of a few, but as a commitment we all carry.
Isabella Jewellers & Refiners, founded by trained goldsmith and diamond evaluator Isabella Kobela and later joined by her daughter, Meiki Ngcengeni, has grown through practical business development support and a long-term commitment to responsible craftsmanship. In a field where black women have historically been excluded, Isabella and Meiki have built a trusted business through skill, consistency and determination.
Support from the De Beers Group Enterprise Development Programme has enabled the company to strengthen its operations, improve financial management and access new markets. What began with jewellery manufacturing has expanded into refining, material recycling and supplying raw materials to the broader industry. Isabella leads on design and craft, while Meiki, as CEO, drives strategy and day-to-day operations.
Their commitment to employing and mentoring young people through hands-on training helps equip emerging artisans with real skills and workplace readiness. It shows how enterprise development can create meaningful work, build confidence and open pathways into a specialised sector.
Education plays a vital role in strengthening communities and opening pathways to employment and opportunity. Through initiatives such as our Community Bursary Programme, we support students from our host communities with the resources, encouragement and guidance they need to complete their studies and grow into capable professionals.
Bursary recipients are pursuing studies in fields including biomedical engineering, education, law, therapeutic health and agriculture. Their choices show personal drive as well as a desire to contribute positively to society through work that builds capability, advances knowledge and supports community well-being.
Our support extends beyond financial assistance. Students receive academic guidance, access to networks and the opportunity to develop confidence, resilience and professional readiness as they move toward entering the workforce. These foundations help them build meaningful careers and use their expertise to uplift their communities and shape their own futures.
This work forms part of our broader commitment to widening access to education and supporting young people to succeed, for themselves and for the generations that follow.
