Thriving communities are essential to our safe, responsible and productive operations. They are home to our people, our neighbours and the stewards of the land, and we recognise the role we play in supporting their long-term well-being.
Our work is guided by our Values, which shape how we engage with employees, families, local leaders, customers and wider society. These Values inform our decisions and reflect our responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the places where we operate.
We believe host communities should benefit from the economic activity and opportunities generated by our operations. Our commitment extends beyond the life of our mines, focusing on lasting contributions that are guided by the priorities and aspirations of our people and partners.
These contributions include investment in health, education and the environment, which form the core of our Sustainable Mining Plan. Our efforts support the systems that enable inclusive development and strengthen community resilience.
In this section, we share examples of how we collaborate with host communities to create lasting value and support sustainable growth.
Strong local systems support everyday life. In our host communities, we play a role in helping them stay resilient. Through our Municipal Capability and Partnership Programme (MCPP), we work alongside municipalities to improve the structures that enable reliable service delivery and long-term development.
Since 2020, MCPP has partnered with the Department of Co-operative Governance, local governments and civil society to build capability in areas such as infrastructure planning, water and sanitation management, development frameworks and interdepartmental coordination. Municipal leaders and technical teams have the opportunity to learn from each other through practical knowledge sharing that helps shape solutions to the specific needs of the communities.
The programme also supports closer working relationships between municipalities, traditional leaders and the private sector. By building trust and encouraging open collaboration, MCPP helps create the conditions for dependable services and wider economic participation in mining regions.
When local capacity grows, communities feel the impact through better services, more opportunities and stronger local economies. Through MCPP, we remain actively involved in strengthening this foundation so that communities can continue to grow and thrive, during mining and beyond.
Our Kumba Iron Ore business continues to work with partners to support facilities that expand access to essential services and long-term opportunities in host communities.
Through our Social and Labour Plan, we collaborated closely with government and civil society to develop the Lebelelang Centre in Tsantsabane. The Centre brings health services and disability support directly into the township, making it easier to reach the people who need it most. It has also created meaningful employment through roles linked to care, administration and community outreach.
We are also supporting the development of the White City Library through a R28 million investment. In partnership with Sol Plaatje University, the library will provide digital access and bring tertiary education resources closer to the community, opening up more opportunities for learning and skills development.
These initiatives reflect our commitment to partnerships that strengthen community well-being and contribute to a lasting foundation for sustainable, inclusive growth.
Zimele, our Enterprise and Youth Development Programme, is one of the ways we support people in our host communities to participate in the economy and build long-term livelihoods. Through the programme’s practical training, business development support, and access to real-world opportunities, entrepreneurs and young people gain the skills and experience they need to build sustainable careers.
A major part of this work focuses on youth employment. Accredited training and structured work placements give young people a pathway into stable roles where they can earn an income, support their families and confidently take the next steps in their lives.
When participants enter Zimele’s hospitality programme, many are looking for a meaningful path into work. Through accredited training, interview preparation and access to real job placements, they build practical skills, confidence and a clear route into employment. Those who go on to work aboard Silversea cruise ships often speak about supporting loved ones, building savings and becoming more independent.
Training is hands-on and workplace-oriented, with participants learning service standards, teamwork and communication in environments that mirror real onboard expectations. Working abroad strengthens financial literacy, resilience and the ability to adapt to diverse cultural and professional settings.
Through our partnership with Silversea Cruises and Summit, candidates move directly from preparation into paid international roles, returning with savings, experience and stronger prospects for their future.
In the Northern Cape, heritage isn’t just a reflection of the past—it’s the foundation of community life today. The Dikgosi Tsa Etsho profiling project, a collaboration between Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore business and the John Taolo Gaetsewe House of Traditional Leaders, captures this spirit through the voices of local traditional leaders.
Their stories speak of connection, responsibility, and unity. They remind us that heritage isn’t only about preservation—it’s a living bond that links generations, shaping how communities grow and adapt. Through this project, the essence of identity is celebrated as a shared strength that carries the Northern Cape forward.
For Kumba Iron Ore, being embedded in this community means recognising that heritage and progress go hand in hand. By honouring the traditions of the Northern Cape’s people, we deepen our relationship with those who call this region home. This collaboration reflects a shared vision of a future built on respect, trust, and common purpose.
The Dikgosi Tsa Etsho project amplifies voices, preserves traditions, and inspires pride in the stories that define the Northern Cape. It’s a step towards ensuring that the rich heritage of this region continues to thrive, shaping the lives and futures of generations to come.
