Our coal portfolio is geographically diverse, with metallurgical coal assets in Australia, and thermal coal assets in South Africa and Colombia.
In South Africa, a substantial proportion of our production was, until recently, thermal coal used for the generation of domestic electricity.
Today the focus is firmly set upon a select group of high performing Mpumalanga-based assets for the supply of around 19 million tonnes of thermal coal a year to export markets across several continents.
This shift became effective on 1 March 2018, with the sale of our Eskom-tied mines – Kriel, New Denmark and New Vaal – to Seriti. Seriti is a broad-based, majority black-owned and controlled mining company that will ensure the continued supply of coal to the national utility. The transaction included our New Largo resource, and serves to reinforce Anglo American’s long-standing commitment to economic empowerment and sustainable transformation of the South African mining landscape.
Coal South Africa's export product is derived from our four and operated mines - Goedehoop, Greenside, Khwezela and Zibulo (a 73: 27 partnership with Anglo American Inyosi Coal), as well as from Mafube colliery - a 50:50 joint venture with diversified resources group Exxaro. Our Isibonelo mine is engaged in the production of thermal coal for Sasol Synthetic Fuels under a long-term supply contract.
Our operations route all export coal through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal RBCTin which we hold a 23.2% stake. We also retain a 50% interest in the double-stage Phola Coal Processing Plant, a 50:50 joint venture with South 32.
Like all our business units, we aim to make a lasting positive impact in all the communities in the areas where we operate, creating shared value and a sustainable future for all South Africans.
We are also actively involved in finding cleaner coal solutions for the world's energy needs through the development of new technologies in areas such as clean coal, carbon capture and storage, and methane emissions reduction.

Coal provides heat to make electricity and steel. It's still the great driver of the industrial world, fuelling the power stations and steelworks of emerging and fast-growing economies.
Thermal coal is the heat source for around 40% of all electricity generated globally today.
In South Africa, thermal coal is what the country uses most to generate its electricity. In fact, around 77% of South Africa's primary energy needs are provided by coal. This is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future as there is a distinct lack of alternatives to coal as a viable source of energy.
India and China's reliance on imported thermal coal are expected to drive continued growing demand in the long term.
